Nova Scotia Homeowners: Unlock Up to $40,000 in Rebates and Interest-Free Loans for Heat Pumps

If you’re a homeowner in Nova Scotia, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your heating system. With energy costs rising, the province and federal government are offering major incentives — and MADA Construction is here to help you claim every dollar you’re eligible for.

Whether you’re switching from oil, upgrading an outdated unit, or making your home more energy efficient, these rebates and interest-free loans can save you thousands.

Step One: Book a Home Energy Assessment (HEA)

The first step in unlocking your rebates is booking a Home Energy Assessment, or HEA. This assessment must be done before any work begins. It’s conducted by a registered energy advisor who provides you with an EnerGuide rating and recommendations for eligible upgrades.

The cost is $199 + HST — but if you qualify for certain rebate programs, this fee may be fully reimbursed.

Completing your HEA unlocks access to:

  • Rebates of $300–$600 per ton for heat pumps
  • The Moderate Income Rebate (MIR)
  • The Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program (OHPA)
  • The Canada Greener Homes Loan

Moderate Income Rebate (MIR)

If your household falls within certain income limits and your home is heated by oil, propane, or natural gas (not electric), you may qualify for the Moderate Income Rebate.

This program offers rebates of $1,000 to $3,000 per ton for eligible heat pump systems.

It also waives or reimburses the cost of your Home Energy Assessment.

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program (OHPA)

If you currently heat your home with oil and meet the income thresholds, you could receive up to $15,000 to switch to an electric heat pump system.

This funding can cover:

  • Heat pump installation
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Oil tank removal
  • Conversion of your existing oil heating system

To qualify, your home must have consumed at least 500 litres of oil in the past year.

Canada Greener Homes Loan (CGHL)

This is a federal loan program that provides between $5,000 and $40,000 — completely interest-free — to help homeowners complete energy-efficient retrofits like heat pump installations.

You can repay the loan over 10 years with no interest, and up to 15% of the funds may be released upfront to help cover deposits.

The remainder is released once the retrofit work is completed.

A Home Energy Assessment is required before you can apply.
